Developing a yoga practice [10 Apr 2006|11:39am]

Hello all!
I am new here and stumbled across this group while trying to find the answer to a specific question about yoga.
I had been taking a Hatha Yoga class for about a year and a half, it was once a week and lasted for 2 hours including the 25 minute yogic sleep at the end. It was wonderful I loved it so much and I loved my yoga teacher who had been practicing and teaching herself for 30 years.
Anyway my teacher moved away and they could not find anyone else to take the class so I no longer have class to go to!
I did try yoga classes at my local gym but they were nothing like the proper class I had done before The Gym yoga classes were made simple and short (45 mins)to suit the gym.
So I am now trying to find a way to practice on my own at home. And I have bought some books and video's but I don't know how to put I routine together I would like to practice every morning for about 30 mins and for a period of 1 or 2 hours a few times a weeks when possible.
All my attempts feel very unstructured and don't know what combinations of postures to use or when to counter a twist or a back bend. I am beginning to feel like I am losing touch with yoga rapidly and it is very disheartening as I was just beginning to really get to grips with it and see what it was capable to doing when the class was stopped.

Any advice on how to proceed or books to recommended will be gratefully received!

Thank you,

P.S. I also did an Ashtanga class for a short time while at college so I have some knowledge of that practice also but not much.

also this has been cross posted a little.

Greetings and Hellos [23 Mar 2006|05:32pm]

Hello everybody,

My name is Hazel, and I started going to Yoga classes in January - I have just completed my first term, and I can't wait for class to start again after the Easter Break.

I found this community after searching around for yoga communities - especially ones geared to beginners, and I am looking forward to being a member here.

I am based in the North of England - and am interested in more yoga resources in this area.

Nice to meet you all

I've started this community in hopes of tracking my progress with yoga as well as sharing and learning from experience. My own experience, and yours. I hope that this community accumulates ample members and participation.

So here's a bit about me. My name's Kaleigh - I'm 5'3" and 130 pounds and I'm trying to lose a bit of weight. I've recently decided to begin exercising strenuously for the first time in about a year. I still have a bit of my flexibility from way back, and I've recently decided to take up yoga. I've researched a little bit of the yoga history, and I'll begin taking formal yoga classes in August after I become acquainted with some beginner-level DVDs and books. The first yoga DVD I purchased is Suzanne Deason's 'Yoga Conditioning for Weight Loss' which is a bit simple for me. However, I am sore from practicing the asanas and the stretching exercises and to me, it's the most relaxing way to become more flexible. So far, I've worked out to my yoga DVD three times in the past two days (as I said earlier, it's simple) and I'm already looking for a DVD a bit more challenging that touches on some new asanas and stretching.

Anyway. Please feel free to join the community if you're into yoga.
